Doug Cook: Saxophone/Flute/Clarinet Doug earned his music performance degree and the prestigious Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Following graduation, he toured the U.S., Europe, and Japan as the lead saxophonist and clarinetist with the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra.
Doug returned to Carlisle, his hometown, and became the Director of North American Music Festivals, operating educational music festivals for nearly 20 years. He has played lead saxophone in the Buzz Jones Big Band for over 30 years, including two tours of Europe and a performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland. Doug also plays for various public and private functions in central Pennsylvania as a longtime member of the Buzz Jones Jazz Quartet and Quintet.
As a freelance musician, he has performed with celebrity acts such as Aretha Franklin, Marie Osmond, The Temptations, the Four Tops, Natalie Cole, Manhattan Transfer, Johnny Mathis, and others. As an educator, Doug directed the Dickinson College Jazz Ensemble (1989–1996), hosting guest soloists including the late saxophone legend Phil Woods. Doug has been with Portraits of White every year since the beginning in 2014 and is a crowd favorite!
Kirstin Myers: Oboe/English Horn Kirstin holds degrees in Music Education and Oboe Performance from IUP, and in 1999 she graduated summa cum laude as a full scholarship recipient from Michigan State University with a M.M. in Oboe Performance.
Since 2000 she has been on the faculty at the Tell School of Music at Millersville University and York College of Pennsylvania and in 2016 was also appointed as oboe professor at Lebanon Valley College. In addition to her collegiate appointments, she maintains a private studio in York and at her home in the Lancaster area. Kirstin freelances and adjudicates frequently in southeastern Pennsylvania.
She currently performs with the York Symphony Orchestra, Berks Sinfonietta, Reading Pops Orchestra, Trio Jolie, The Silverwood Trio, and the award-winning, Billboard-charting piano-oboe duo Double Keyed with Frances Drost.
Wayne Fox: Jazz Pianist/Clarinet Wayne is a 1973 graduate of Lebanon Valley College with a B.S. degree in Music Education. He also holds a Master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami (Coral Gables, Florida).
Wayne is retired from the Cornwall-Lebanon School District, where he taught for 37 years as the elementary band director. He also served as the Music Department Chair for 26 years. He is active as a private music instructor and freelance musician in central Pennsylvania, performing with, among others, the Hershey Theatre Orchestra, the Buzz Jones Big Band, and the Dave Stahl Big Band. Since 1979 he has also been the conductor of the Perseverance Band of Lebanon, founded in 1857.
Wayne is a member of the Lebanon County Musicians Hall of Fame, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and the 2008 recipient of the District 7 PMEA Citation of Excellence. Wyane has been with Portraits of White since 2014.
Allen Roth: String Bass Allen started playing bass in high school and went on to major in music at Lebanon Valley College. After college he started a widely varied music career, in which he toured extensively in much of the U.S., Europe, and Puerto Rico.
You might have caught Allen playing in groups such as The Maxwell Project, or with Doug Brewin’s tribute to Alan Jackson, or in various area theaters such as Mt. Gretna, Allenberry, Totem Pole Playhouse, and Theatre Harrisburg at Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. Allen has played for Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, Robert Goulet, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, the Platters, the Smothers Brothers, the Lennon Sisters, and the Osmond Brothers. He also appeared with Sally Struthers in the show Always, Patsy Cline.
Allen is retired from public school teaching. He was a band director in the Carlisle Area School District for almost 30 years. Allen has been a part of Portraits of White since 2021.
David Zygmunt: Percussion David is a native of Central Pennsylvania. He performed in and led many dynamic ensembles both as a career military musician and as a freelance artist. His performances with the United States Navy Bands have spanned the globe from South America to the South Pacific, from the Pacific Northwest to West Africa, and from British Columbia to the Caribbean.
He is a versatile percussionist, performing in all musical idioms. In addition to teaching percussion at Dickinson College since 2000 and performing as a member of the Faculty Jazz Quartet, he is a regular performer at Allenberry Playhouse where he has performed in a wide range of musicals, from Nunsense to The Full Monty and beyond. ”
David has been the Portraits of White drummer for many years.
