Many of you know that we refer to our counselors as Chiefs but may not know the silliness that has evolved behind it. In keeping with a vaguely nautical theme, since we are situated on the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay, staff are assigned titles based on our duties as if we were on board a rather unique ship.
Now adding... Midshipmen! This is a new opportunity to get involved and make The Marsh the very best we can!
Midshipmen are 13- and 14-year-old campers who are interested in developing their skills and
becoming an active part of the day to day operations. They are ready to be a positive
influence and recognized for contributing, while having fun together.
Midshipmen will follow the general activity schedule including pool time every afternoon (see FUN tab) but in addition to their own activities, they will also be scheduled in small groups for hands-on use of skills and knowledge.
This may include:
Midshipmen will be expected to play well with others and serve, with the goal of helping The Marsh, instead of just coming to be entertained or to "hang" with their friends. Mids are still considered campers and will follow the rules and expectations of campers. They will be supervised continuously, and will not have the responsibilities (or privileges) of the volunteers. [Please apply to volunteer when you are 15!]
Midshipmen registration slots will be limited each week, and we ask that you please consider registering for a maximum of 3 weeks. This smaller group size will allow for supervision by leadership, and there will be clear and enforced expectations for participation. Marsh Morale has always been a part of our culture and we want to help teach and actively partner with older campers who are ready to take a step forward!
Captain (Director) (aka Evelyn) is in command of the ship and is responsible for the safety of all crew and the vessel.
1st Mate (Program Director) is in charge of the onboard day to day running of the ship. They are also the Ship’s Safety and Security Officer.
2nd Mate (Activities Director) is the onboard Navigator responsible for maintaining up to date navigational information (so you know where you are going every day!!) and in charge of maintaining distress signaling.
Chief (Engineer/Counselors) in charge of the ship's cargo (aka campers) and responsible for the upkeep of all systems. But they also get to be a bit of Medical Purser, Cook's Assistant, Watch Leader, Bosun's Mate and more!
